Altibox is rolling out ultra high definition (UHD)/4K services in Norway to help differentiate its gigabit fiber-to-the-home service. Huawei is supplying Altibox with a complete 4K-capable entertainment platform, including set-top box that supports 60 frames per second and a multi-digital rights management (DRM) platform.
The new platform eliminates the need for the customer’s set-top box to be equipped with a hard disk, reducing costs for Altibox and improving customer user experience. With the new system, the customers can store 500 hours of recording in the cloud from the extensive channel lineup. Using the fiber connection, the customer can easily pause, start over and record 4K channels in future. Altibox’s evaluation project, involving friendly users, found that UHD/4K significantly increases user experience and enjoyment.
When Altibox connects its first customers to UHD/4K in March 2017, it will become the first operator to have commercially launched 4K IPTV, including live TV and a video-on demand service in Norway.
