I've got to admit Amazon's current UK advertising campaign is a real winner. It's basic premise is that the firm invents something revolutionary that none of us notice, because it becomes so normal once they do it. It's a refreshing change from the lik...

It seems it is impossible to access the website of French magazine Closer. To my mind, there can only be two reasons why.First, the website is inundated with people trying to log on. The reason for this is that the magazine has reportedly published pic...

I won't bore you with all the details of Apple's latest iPhone - the web is awash with those.Instead, I'll point out that the vendor runs the risk of missing out on lucrative carrier contracts in the UK. That's because the range of LTE frequencies incl...

This is more of a complaint than a 'buzzy' commentary.

Recently I've been plagued by phone calls from PRs on my mobile and landline. Typically if there's no answer on the mobile, they try the landline immediately afterwards....

I find myself torn over the potential that the FBI has been gathering information on iPhone users.

A hacktivist group Antisec has published details of around a million iPhone users it claims it picked up from an FBI laptop -...

If it was a network I'd agree, but the report should have read "generates more mobile traffic...". In that context, perhaps not all that surprising?

in the topic Fiber Optic - Do we need it? in the forum General Discussion
Cost would probably prevent me upgrading if I had the choice. I factor in the need for a new computer in that, as my desktop is ageing and slow enough on ADSL. However, I'm in a rural location and am a far lighter web user, so I'll cross that bridge if we ever come to it here.

in the topic New iPad - your thoughts in the forum General Discussion
I think Leslie raises some interesting points about usage here. I check news sites online on a daily basis (well, it is my job afterall), which means I tend to get sucked into always looking at the same sites and similar stories (tech stuff for work, motorcycle and motorsport stuff for leisure).

One of the joys of picking up a newspaper is that it directs me to other stories - national politics/economic stories; general "cat stuck up tree" human interest stories, and even sports I wouldn't necessarily follow online (snooker, darts et al).

Travelling is an interesting angle. If I'm travelling for work, I'll be checking most of the same sites I do here at my desktop. But if I'm travelling for leisure, I don't want to read any news at all - it'd be like a busman's holiday if I did.

However, I can't deny the pervasiveness of Apple's iPad (whichever generation), and it's the only device people don't look like geeks using in my local pub (try taking a laptop in there of a Friday night).

in the topic Is ZTE waning? in the forum General Discussion
An interesting point from Telecoms Rambling's Rob Powell regarding ZTE's involvement in Softbank Mobile's LTE rollout. While ZTE pitched itself as the leading vendor in this rollout, subsequent contracts with Ericsson and NSN appear to carry more importance in terms of the work being conducted. As a result, ZTE has lost the marketing battle already, Powell reasons, and has missed an opportunity to simply talk up its success in cracking Softbank. Food for thought...

in the topic How did Nordberg do at Sony Ericsson? in the forum General Discussion
Lots of back-slapping in the announcement that Bert Nordberg will be replaced as president and chief of Sony Ericsson (now Sony Mobile Communications) in mid-May, but is it really warranted?

The firm congratulated him on overseeing the transition from making feature phones to smartphones, yet the firm slipped back into the red in 4Q11.

Will be interesting to see its 3Q12 results - the first full quarter of the new management's rein.
