At the end of the day, it will all come down to backhaul availability, regardless of which one is deemed better or becomes more economical.
I saw a presentation recently from Ericsson showing their LTE BTS with 4x4 MIMO 20MHz sector doing 155Mbps while driving. A 3 sector site would require an OC12 to manage that much throughput. It is hard enough to get a T1 outside of a major city area, let alone an OCXX.
The backhaul model has to change before either of these becomes economical to deploy. The operators will go bankrupt trying to keep the throughput available.
Why do I need that much throughput? Are we all going to put 52in HD flat screens in our Hummers so we can watch the football games in HD on the way to the tailgate party?
