Read reports this morning about UK regulator Ofcom probing James Murdoch's fitness to hold a broadcasting license at BSkyB, which got me wondering why he doesn't stand down from News Corp, the satellite broadcaster's majority shareholder.
Some quick background. Murdoch quit as the head of NC subsidiary News International a couple weeks back due to an ongoing investigation into phone hacking by the firm's newspapers. Makes no sense to me for him to continue at the parent company if he doesn't think he can maintain his post at the subsidiary.
I guess there's some political play going on that I don't understand, involving News Corp's desire to fully own BSkyB, which itself raises questions of media plurality in the UK (it would own newspapers, TV and radio broadcasters), and just plain maintaining the Murdoch's reign at NC?
