I'm told a comedy sketch showing two Scots entering a 'voice activated' elevator and then spending the next five minutes screaming "eleven!" at the thing to get it moving is a global hit and needs little explanation.
The basic premise of the sketch is that voice recognition systems the world over struggle with our fine Scottish accents.
All of which makes me think satellite TV operator BSkyB has hit the nail on the head by employing a firm from Northern Ireland - another part of the UK with thick accents - to handle its customer care automation. SpeechStorm blends "speech with touch-tone interaction", and I'm willing to bet it's got the speech part nailed.
