Sony unveiled its first own-brand handsets in a decade this week, following its decision late last year to buy partner Ericsson out of their Sony Ericsson joint venture.
A couple of interesting points. First, even Sony admits the move is a bit premature, as it's still waiting for regulatory approval of the buyout. Second, pictures of the new products still carry the joint venture's logo (on the back - Sony name only on the front).
I guess the important thing for Sony is more the multi-screen capabilities owning the handset brand brings, rather than pitching it as a direct competitor to current market leaders Samsung, Nokia and Apple. It'll be interesting to see if Sony can leverage its current stack of content to good effect - maybe even becoming the fourth major player after Apple, Android and Microsoft?
