The EC today detailed plans to make public data available throughout the European Union. This involves local authorities opening access to their records, and plans to establish a common framework for access.
Digital Agenda vice president Neelie Kroes reckons the move will provide a boost to web entrepreneurs, journalists and academics, while figures from the Commission estimate easier access will boost the value derived from public data from €32 million per year at present to €70 million per year.
What do you all reckon to this? Is it a necessary step, or one that risks the integrity of thousands (millions?) of people's info?
