yes there is a lot different stuff on the so-called "green IT/telco" topic. i'd recommend you to have a look at the web sites of : Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T, Verizon, SmartGrid... you'll find really a lot of material on this. ALU makes a very big talk out of it, so you should find some powerpoints over there ... Huawei is also worth having a look at, by the by.
There are some estimates of power consumption for different transmission technologies (such as classical SDH, IP/Eth, MPLS/Eth, xWDM, OTN...). I run across some of these whilst reviewing the papers from the last conferences in 2009, so have a look at OFC2009 and ECOC2009. The main finding is that the agile optical infrastructure should be used (OTN+ROADMs) with the MPLS/Eth-based services over it ...
